T-Mobile Acquires AWS Spectrum From U.S. Cellular, Will Expand LTE To 29 New Markets

Verizon Wireless has the biggest 4G LTE network in the U.S., AT&T trails close behind in second place. T-Mobile’s LTE network is relatively new, but the carrier is working hard to make its network available in new markets. T-Mobile has announced that it has acquired key AWS spectrum from U.S. Cellular in the Mississippi Valley region. This acquisition will allow the carrier to expand its 4G LTE network to 29 new markets that house some 32 million people.

Subject to approval by the FCC and Department of Justice, this deal has cost T-Mobile $308 million in cash. After the deal gets regulatory approval, the transaction is expected to close in Q4, 2013. However with the exposure its getting in key markets such as St. Louis, Kansas City, New Orleans, Louisville and more, this is certainly not a bad deal. Incremental roll-out of the carrier’s 4G LTE network in these markets is imminent, though they’ve not said when the network will start to go live in the region. Since MetroPCS has been acquired by T-Mobile, its customers too will be able to benefit from the carrier’s LTE network expansion.
